In this honors seminar, students from across colleges and disciplines combined research into humanitarianism, social responsibility, and the principles of design thinking into the development of a project that benefited the mission of Cincinnati based non-profit Village Life and its work in impoverished communities in rural Tanzania. In this course, students developed proposals for design solutions that benefited the community.
We worked collaboratively with members of Village Life Outreach to define areas where disciplinary knowledge was applied. Once proposals were defined, we created design solutions that will be implemented on-site in Tanzania. During Spring Break, we traveled with Village Life Outreach to northern Tanzania in order to implement these projects. This poster is a collection of the different projects that were proposed and implemented in Tanzania.
Founded in 2004, Village Life Outreach Project, Inc. is an official 501 (c)3 non-profit organization based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, whose mission is to unite communities to promote Life, Health and Education. Most of Village Life’s work focuses on three remote and impoverished villages in the Rorya district of Tanzania, East Africa: Roche, Burere, and Nyambogo. Over the last ten years, VLOP has led 19 service learning and volunteer trips to Tanzania with community leaders, professionals and students. Their community engagement model is to work in conjunction with local leaders from the villages of Roche, Nyambogo and Burere as they develop their own priorities and receive training to improve conditions.
