BURERE SCHOOL LAYOUT ASSESSMENT
STUDENTS: Michelle Baverman, Peter Stiver
Village Life Outreach Project in the past built a school in the village of Burere with the help of Engineers Without Borders. While in Burere, we met with SHED and discussed potential improvements to the school. We observed the layout and gathered data about how many students and teachers use this space, as well as getting a general idea of how school is run each day. The teachers and members of the SHED Education committee expressed interest in more storage for books, and possible storage for teachers to stow their own belongings, to make each day easier for them. The teachers and committee members understood that with these minor improvements, functionality of the school will be greatly improved, therefore more children will want to attend, more teachers will want to come teach at the school, and because they are working to make positive change, the Tanzanian government may take notice and then take further steps to improve the school. It was really amazing to meet with the committee members who care so passionately about improving various aspects of their community, especially when it comes to education. |
