WHAT IS HUMANITATIANISM?
BEFORE THE TRIP
Humanitarianism generally refers to the giving of water, food, medicine, shelter, etc. to individuals in need around the world in order to alleviate the suffering of others. Often times, humanitarian acts is carried out through large organizations—UNESCO, the Catholic Church, and the International Red Cross (and affiliates), governments, and smaller NGOs. I think that today, humanitarianism as a whole is seeking to become more community-based and results driven in place of previously largely top-down approaches that did not necessarily deliver desired results. Nonetheless, in many situations top-down humanitarianism continues to take place. |
AFTER THE TRIP
Humanitarianism is taking many different forms. In general, humanitarianism is becoming more focused on partnerships and engaging in dialogue the communities in need. There are many forms of humanitarianism taking place including business model humanitarianism. All in all, humanitarianism is becoming more holistic with emphasis placed on cultural appropriateness and the communities in need. For me, humanitarianism is an interaction between two individuals or groups that focuses on helping people in need of basic necessities through respect and partnerships. Through my experience in Tanzania, I have been able to better understand the importance of respect and cooperation in improving situations with individuals in need. |
