Roche Health Center Staff Housing
Students: Jesse Larkins, Michelle Baverman
In 2007, the Roche community identified the immense need for a permanent health care facility near Roche, Tanzania. Village Life contacted the UC School of Architecture and Design and this began an ongoing collaboration with UC, VLOP, SHED and the villagers of Roche to create a successful, sustainable healthcare facility in Roche. The Roche Health Center project began in 2008 and the Clinic opened its doors on April 1, 2011. Since that time, thousands have received health care at the facility. In fall 2014, UC Health provided a significant donation to support the creation of Staff Housing so that Doctors and Nurses could live on-site to provide fulltime health care at the clinic. Construction began in January 2015 with our Construction Manager, Richard Elliott, working with five local contractors and SHED. During our visit in March, 2015, Graduate Architecture student Jesse Larkins and UC student Michelle Baverman worked with Professor Zaretsky and the contractors to address questions of detailing and design in the development of the RHC Staff Housing. Jesse Larkins will return to Tanzania in summer 2015 to do a 3-month co-op working on the Staff Housing. |
